The Athena Award

History:  The ATHENA Foundation supports their ATHENA Award program, which promotes women's leadership and honors outstanding leaders.  By recognizing exceptional individuals, the Award program seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence.  ATHENA Award presentations are celebrations of excellence and often become premiere community events.  The caliber of candidates who receive the ATHENA Award is exceptional and leads to significant and substantial recognition for participating organizations.

The Criteria:  Nominations are solicited and one individual in the community is awarded an ATHENA sculpture who meets the following criteria:

  1. The individual actively assists women in realizing their full leadership potential;
  2. The individual demonstrates excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession;
  3. The individual provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.

The Sculpture:
  Sculptor Linda Ackley chose Athena, the dynamic goddess of Greek mythology, as her inspiration for the sculpture.  Wise and valiant, Athena was an image of resolute courage and wisdom, guided and enlightened by reason. The sculpture is beautiful and can be viewed below.

The marble base represents the recipient's solid foundation.  The unique textures of the bronze differ on each sculpture, just as the life experiences of the recipients differ.  The cut crystal symbolizes the many facets of human character and the light emanating from the recipient.  Viewed from various angles, this form's outstretches arms can be seen to express the celebration of achievement and reaching out to others.

Each unique sculpture is numbered as one of a select edition, each being different, hand-made and special.

This event is a truly spectacular event, with leadership sessions, motivational and inspirational seminars which leave you recharged and renewed to fulfill even more of your potential! The Cahokia Chamber of Commerce is a contributor for 2007-2008.
